FLORIDA

Brief History
North Captiva Island is part of a chain of islands which include Sanibel and Captiva. Captiva Island was inhabited by Calusa Indians over 6,000 years ago. When the conquistadors arrived, they nearly wiped out the indigenous tribes.  Captiva island became familiar with invaders, such as Jose' Gaspar the pirate. It was these pirates that would help the island earn its name, after a woman was held captive by the pirates.
In 1921, a hurricane severed Captiva Island into two separate land masses, thus creating a second island, this island is known as North Captiva Island. Since the hurricane, North Captiva Island has slowly developed over the last 40 years, but the island is only accessible by small airplane or boat. With limited development potential, it is unlikely that North Captiva Island will ever see a motor car or a McDonalds. The U.S. Government has established a large wildlife sanctuary, insuring that the natural habitat of North Captive remains protected.
